A Call to Action...
Have you ever listened to music? Of course you have, but I mean, have you ever really listened to it? Have you ever deconstructed a tune piece by piece, or trained your ears to hear things that you never could before? Most people have listened to music their whole lives. If you’ve read anything by Malcolm Gladwell, you’re probably aware that it takes 10,000 hours, or about 10 years, to practice something enough to be considered a world renowned expert. Shouldn’t that mean that everybody is a master at listening to music? Surprisingly, and perhaps unfortunately, most people have only listened to music passively. They have never taken the time to really think about what they’re hearing. Consequently, most people have not mastered the skill of listening to music, even though they’ve been doing it their entire lives. Don’t be one of those people. In my opinion, there is a master artist inside each of us. Everybody has a song to sing, but few have taken the time to do it, so to speak. In music, we call it the artist’s sound. When I first started composing, I wondered if I would turn out to be an artist who had a particular sound. I even tried to avoid being categorized by creating songs in multiple genres. Eventually I realized that despite my efforts, there were certain themes and patterns that consistently crept into my music. I had found my sound. Listen to my music, (and I mean really listen), and you will find it. You will notice how I can’t resist putting an ambient percussive bass in nearly every song, how I love randomly throwing in high pitched metals, or how I almost always use spiccato strings, especially in eighth note couplets, to lead into something epic. Like every artist, I hope to inspire people with my music. I want people to not only enjoy it, but challenge it. Pick it apart and imagine how you would do it differently. Better yet, follow that impulse, and start making your own music. Then I’ll know you’re really listening. | News3/28/2012 LabuGames has released Pirateers!
